Exposure to asbestos may increase the risk of several serious diseases including:
  • Asbestosis is a lung ailment that can produce shortness of breath, coughing, and permanent lung damage . Asbestosis is essentially a scarring of the lung tissue caused by asbestos fibers rubbing against the lung tissue over an extended period of time. Typically, asbestosis is treated with either oxygen or steroids. Asbestosis is the most common asbestos related disease. This disease effects many thousands of people a year.
  • Lung cancer is a very common effect of prolonged asbestos exposure. Typically, lung cancer is noted in smokers that have also been exposed to asbestos fibers. Smoking and asbestos have what is called a synergetic effect. In short, if you were a smoker and you were exposed to asbestos during your lifetime, you are over 10 times more like to develop lung cancer. Lung cancer can also be caused exclusively by asbestos exposure and is at times found in asbestos exposed people that have no smoking history.
  • Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that effects the outer protective linings of the lungs, stomach or heart. Mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure and is the most serious type of associated cancer. Approximately 2000-3000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the United States each year.
  • Other cancers, such as those of the larynx, oropharynx and kidney.
