  • Pulmonologist: A pulmonologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. If the X-ray shows suspicious marks on the lungs, he/she will perform a lung biopsy to determine if the spot is cancerous.
  • Pathologist: A doctor who finds diseases by studying cells and tissue under a microscope. This doctor usually analyzes the tissue and cells obtained in the biopsy. Usually you won't personally interact with this doctor. He or she writes up a pathology report, which contains the cancer information from your biopsy or surgery.
  • Oncologist: A cancer specialist doctor. This doctor will usually determine an accurate diagnosis of the cancer and what stage it is in. From here the oncologist will determine the next step.  If he believes the cancer is operable, you will be referred to a surgeon. If not, he could recommend other treatment options such as Alimta or Cisplatin.
  • Thoracic Surgeon: The thoracic surgeon performs chest surgery and may also have specialized training in surgical oncology—the use of surgery to remove cancerous tumors and tissue.
