Should You Get Tested?
If you are interested in getting tested for asbestos damage, the first order of business is to present at your primary care physician. You should let the physician know that you have reason to suspect that you may have been exposed to asbestos in some capacity (either through primary or second hand exposure). If you are presenting with any asbestos symptoms (coughing, wheezing, pain, etc.... ) you should let your doctor know immediately. The doctor will likely give you a physical exam including obtaining an X-ray and/or CT scan of your chest. Such tests are given with the intention of uncovering any tell tale signs of asbestos damage. An X-ray will reveal whether a person has scarring of the lung tissue which would be consistent with prolonged exposure to asbestos (aka asbestosis). The X-ray and/or CT scan may also reveal the presence of tumors or a mass which might require further investigation.
After the tests are complete your doctor will be in a position to determine if you need further testing. If your doctor finds evidence of asbestos disease he or she may send you to pulmonologist (lung doctor) or a thoracic surgeon to obtain a tissue sample for biopsy. If these specialists determine that the tissue is cancerous, you will likely be sent to an oncologist that specializes in the type of cancer that is discovered. If you would like information on the top doctors, pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons or oncologists, please contact our offices.
